Welcome to the Royal Belgian Shipowners’ Association.
For over a 100 years our association has been at the service of the merchant navy. As the shipping industry operates worldwide, our activities have extended beyond Belgium, to the level of European and international organizations.
With a fleet totalling 9.5 million gross tonnes as of 1 January 2014, Belgium is one of the world’s twenty main shipping nations and a respected Member of the International Maritime Organization, where our country has a seat on the Council.
In these ways we contribute to the development of worldwide shipping, the prime mover of world trade and therefore the engine of our prosperity. The importance of our sector has recently been clearly mapped by an Oxford Economics research paper entitled “The economic value of the EU shipping industry”, available on our download page.
Moreover ocean-going vessels are by far the most efficient and environment-friendly transport mode!
Nevertheless shipowners are determined to improve the energy efficiency of shipping as well as to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, sulphur, nitrates and fine dusts. Although the contribution made by our industry in this regard is unprecedented, our efforts are not always appreciated accordingly.
Crew welfare on board of our ships has always been one of our association’s main concerns. Jointly with our social partners we have spared no effort to assist the authorities in the ratification and implementation process of the Maritime Labour Convention, designed to create a level playing field worldwide with respect to terms and conditions of employment as well as living conditions on ocean-going vessels.
Finaly, some threats to our vessels and especially to our crews, including offshore piracy in Africa, require our and your attention.
The team of the Royal Belgian Shipowners’ Association is at your service. We wish you a useful browsing of our website.
